Oh, Google. How mysterious art thou. Since the dawn of the search engine people have constantly struggled to find ways to get their listings to the front page of every search engine. When you think of search engines, the first thing that comes to mind is Google. Gone are the days of stuffing keywords into alt tags or hidden text blackhat techniques. Things are a lot different than they used to be. So what has changed, and what can you do about it?

One of the most important elements of a strong SEO campaign is backlinks. Once upon a time it was a rat race to build as many links as possible to game Google’s algorithms. That simply doesn’t work anymore. In fact, it could actually hurt your rankings and end up smacking your site with manual penalties, one of the worst-case scenarios when it comes to SEO. Your backlink profile needs to appear organic and realistic. Don’t expect to create your website, toss a bunch of spammy links to it and expect it to rank. It just doesn’t work anymore. You will need to build your website by marketing it on existing, quality, trusted websites. One great way is to create newsworthy content. If your content is valuable, you’ll be able to easily find reputable sources that will be happy to post your content which will result in a high quality link to your site.

Content is King. You’ve certainly heard this before, but most people seem to overlook the fact that not all content is equal. One of Google’s favorite things in the world is original, readable, personable content. Your content needs to have character, a personality and of course it needs to be unique. Simply taking existing articles, changing a few words with a “spin” tool just doesn’t work. Google’s algorithm is far more intelligent than you’re giving them credit for. Not only can they see through common things such as synonyms and replacement words, it is also completely aware of your context, meaning that unless you’re adding value to a topic, it will be considered duplicate, regardless of how original the wording is. If you want to rank, you absolutely need original content with original context. Those two elements combined is the key to getting that Google love that you so desire.

Local SEO has become increasingly more important over the past several years. Many businesses only service a particular area and therefore could care less about people that are distant away from their location from seeing their website. A great example is a boutique flower shop. If you have a flower shop located in Phoenix, Arizona, are you concerned about people in Florida seeing your website? Of course not. If you are targeting a particular area, it’s very important to have references to that are within the content of your content.

SEO is no simple task. If you want to get the best results, you really should leave it up to a professional to handle this for you or your company.
